Planning the CLIL unit

In this blog entry, I would like to share with you with my reflections on planning and preparing the whole CLIL unit.

My topic of CLIL Unit is "The most famous artists of modern and contemporary art" and I will conduct it in Grade 4.

Planning a CLIL unit is not an easy task, especially that I have never planned CLIL lessons before. It is a completely different thing than preparing a normal English lesson. Here, apart from English, we also have additional subjects through which we want to teach the language. My main subject is art but I also have some elements of culture, science and social aspects.

I had to create activities connected with the topic and adapt them to the age and language level of children. It was also important to combine the lessons with each other in such a way that they would have something in common. Unfortunately, it is hard to find tasks on the internet for CLIL lesson. So I had to create many activities or simplify texts, as they were too difficult for children from the 4th grade.

When planning lessons, I always have a problem with timing. I never know how much time should I give for particular activities. It is the same with exercises, sometimes I want to give them too many for one lesson and then there is not enough time for them. Fortunately, I have a very helpful mentor teacher who agreed to check my plans. Thanks to that I could change some things that were wrong.

This week I will conduct my first CLIL lesson and I hope that it will go well and according to plan.

  1. You are right that planning CLIL tasks is not easy. It is also very time consuming as you have to adjust activities or create most of them on your own and what is also important each lesson has to be connected with previous one in a logical way. I also have problems with timing of activities - although I know how long e.g. games should last, I still give my students not enough time for projects or writings. I hope that your CLIL lessons will be successful :) Good luck!
